Energy Centre

The Christchurch Hospital Energy Centre provides the hospital with renewable energy. The existing coal-fired boiler house sustained critical damage during the 2010-2011 earthquakes, compromising its seismic resilience. The $60 million design and construction of the new energy centre had to cater to the already existing plant and machinery.

The plant comprised many different shaped components, which had to be allowed for in the design. The structural steel framing that was installed over top of the machinery allowed for the different shaped openings to fit around particular plant pieces. This made for an interesting site installation.
