Project overview:

The Linwood College Rebuild is one of the biggest Ministry of Education projects in the South Island. New buildings were based on common grid modules and have structure with no load-bearing internal or external walls. This enables the ability for teaching and non-teaching uses to be redistributed in future without need for any significant structural work.

Eccentrically braced frame (EBF) systems allow ductility to be concentrated at designated locations, minimising damage to other parts of the structure. Having the links designed to be replaceable with bolted connections increases the repairability of the building post-seismic event, leading to a more sustainable, repairable building and allowed for significant savings in both the foundations and remainder of the superstructure, minimising the building’s carbon and environmental impact and providing cost savings to MOE.

Multiple buildings within the site were planned out in sequence, and all having very similar construction made the build run smoothly and efficiently on-site. All welded beams were NZ made by Steltech Structural. Southbase awarded VIP Steel with a certificate in recognition for overall effort, championing Health & Safety and finishing well at Linwood College.
