Project overview:

This build was very unique in many ways and needed by L.P.C to maintain their new fleet of straddle cranes as the new ones are taller as they can stack containers 4 high and the old ones only go 3 high. Placement of building within short distance of the sea posed many questions of the coatings system to be used to combat salt corrosion. The 21-metre high doorways that would be fitted with full-height fast roller shutter doors. The door jamb columns for fixing the roller shutter doors could only have a maximum of 3-4 mm deviation over the full height of 23.5 metres.

The paint specs that we worked to called for some members to have four coats of different spec paint including one coat of epoxy intumescent which was conducted at VIP coatings plant in Rolleston and transported to site by VIP Transport. The transport side of this project also called for pre-planning routes and times from leaving VIP coating to get to site, also coordination with Lyttelton Tunnel operators as we were transporting 23.5-metre columns with pilot vehicles and had strict times to be on and off road.

The full office, workshops and wash bay package with a total weight of 380T was installed within a 28-week period working to H/C program. The site was in extremely limited space and VIP utilised their 100T Liebherr crane on site for the full project, reducing crane moves to minimum.

Walkways and gantries were all in the VIP package with VIP Metalworks providing safety handrailing for all gantry walkways and stairs. The wash bay was a stand-alone structure all coated to the top spec of painting and contained four levels of gantry walkways for access and cleaning of straddle cranes.
