Project overview:
The Redcliffs School buildings were required to be robust and stiff and remain fully operational following an SLS2 earthquake. The structure incorporated steel hinge joints where suspended floors met the ground to allow the building to bend without damaging the primary structure, and sliding connections between the suspended floor beams and lower ground level to allow for lateral spread movement.
Steel was the ideal material due to being relatively lightweight and rigid. This created an innovative and low-cost structural system which is flexible, efficient, fully re-levelable, and repairable. A high level of coordination was required between steel, precast and timber trades to meet very precise connection requirements.
